Kentucky Medical School Scholarship

Annual Scholarship For Medical Student from Warren County

In 2010, the Warren County Medical Society initiated an annual scholarship for a qualified medical student, attending a Kentucky medical school, who is a resident of Warren County (or a contiguous county). The hope is to help out someone from our own community, and to encourage him or her to return to this area to practice medicine.

Both Greenview Hospital and the Medical Center have agreed to partner in this scholarship, each offering $2000 per year on an alternating basis. The Medical Society will also contribute $1000 per year, for a total amount of $3000 per year.

We have set up an agreement with University of Kentucky and University of Louisville medical schools, to alternate every two years, so that each would receive a grant from each of the two hospitals in successive years. Hence, the schedule of donations would start out thus:

Recipient Hospital donor Medical Society Total
  2010 U.K. Medical Center, $2000 $1000 $3000
  2011 U.K. Greenview Hospital, $2000 $1000 $3000
  2012 U. of  L. Medical Center, $2000 $1000 $3000
  2013 U. of  L. Greenview Hospital, $2000 $1000 $3000
  2014 U.K. Medical Center, $2000 $1000 $3000
  etc

There may be certain years that a qualified student from this area is attending the new medical school in Pikeville, KY. In this case, a scholarship may be granted to this student, and the rotation will be pushed back one year. To be fair, Pikeville would only be eligible once in three years to give the other two schools equal time.

Qualifying criteria for the scholarship include (1) resident of Warren County or contiguous county, (2) 3rd or 4th year student at a Kentucky medical school, in good standing, and (3) planning to return to this area, to practice in a primary care specialty. Exceptions to the last criterion are allowed for a needed non-primary care specialty.
