Physician Education
A Child Obesity Forum was held July 16, at the Medical Center Auditorium. Dr Dave Allen of the FitLouisville organization spoke about treating obesity in children and adults. A small but enthusiastic group attended.
Progress: Planning for next year might target a specific group such as a PTO or civic group.
Public Awareness Carnival
Partner with the Back to School Bash, to increase awareness about the problem of overweight in our society.
Progress: Successful event, bookmarkers with healthyweightkids.org web site were distributed to hundreds of families.
Kids Try-athlon Event
Organize a mini-triathlon at Russell Sims Waterpark and Preston Miller Park for summer of 2005. Two age groups will compete in a triathlon (swim-bike-run) and and a doathlon (bike and run). Also a fun run for all ages. Prizes awarded to all finishers.
Progress: Event was very successful, and many volunteers and participants are eager to hold another event next year.
Toolkit for School and Community Education
Develop a toolkit for small presentations in schools and community groups. Include relevant info, cultural issues, results of our survey, nutrition facts, and strategies for bringing about changes.
Progress: A toolkit with educational materials, sample foods, and teaching plans has been developed at a cost of $75 per kit. Some kits are already in use at Natcher Elementary School.
